Post-Mortem Confirms Accidental Chest Trauma in Striker’s Fatal Clash
A preliminary post-mortem has revealed that Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died from “accidental chest trauma” following a devastating collision during a Spanish second-division match.
The 30-year-old father-of-one suffered the fatal impact in the 97th minute of Monday’s fixture after a challenge involving FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono. Pathologists submitted their initial findings to an investigating court in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, describing the chest trauma as a cause consistent with the player’s passing, while further laboratory tests are underway on the Spanish mainland.
The incident occurred near the halfway line, with the match referee’s report stating that Owono used “excessive force” during the challenge. The goalkeeper received a red card, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Following the collision, paramedics treated de Miguel on the pitch before he was rushed to Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital, where he tragically passed away the following morning.
Owono released a statement expressing his deep remorse, stating that he is experiencing immense pain and will fully respect the ongoing legal and sporting processes.
In addition to examining the nature of the collision, local authorities and a homicide squad have launched an independent inquiry into the emergency medical response on the pitch and during transit. Investigators are reviewing protocols regarding the use of equipment, oxygen administration, and the speed of evacuation to the ambulance.
De Miguel’s body was flown to the mainland for his funeral service in Navahermosa, where family, teammates, and loved ones gathered to pay their final respects.
