US President Donald Trump has candidly acknowledged that the ongoing military conflict with Iran played a decisive role in the Republican Party’s crushing defeat during the nationwide midterm elections.
Speaking late Tuesday in a telephone interview with Fox News, Trump admitted that voter frustration regarding economic strains—particularly surging fuel and gasoline costs linked directly to the war—created a difficult electoral climate for his party.
“I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” Trump told the network. “People agree with what I’m doing on Iran, but they really probably weren’t willing to do the short-term consequence of paying more for gasoline, and you know I understand that.”
A Costly Strategic Gamble
The high-stakes conflict, which recently saw U.S. forces strike targeted installations such as an anti-aircraft facility on Qeshm Island, has sent shockwaves through global energy markets. While Trump staunchly defended his historical handling of Tehran—framing the intervention as a vital long-term security measure to neutralize nuclear threats—voters heavily penalized the ruling party at the ballot box over the cost-of-living crisis.
The electoral backlash culminated in a sweeping “blue wave” that handed the Democratic Party control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The legislative rout effectively strips Republicans of their congressional dominance and sets up a tense political gridlock for the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency.
Looking Ahead
Despite the “unpleasant” election results, Trump maintained that his administration pursued the correct path historically and insisted that fuel prices would stabilize quickly once the geopolitical crisis is fully resolved.
As Washington braces for a divided government, the White House has signaled a willingness to negotiate with incoming Democratic majorities on select domestic priorities like immigration, even as the president-elect prepares to wield his constitutional veto power against opposing legislative agendas.
