A routine journey to a football fixture turned fatal on Monday morning when a yet-to-be-identified footballer lost his life in a multi-vehicle collision along the Magboro axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The tragic incident, which occurred within the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, involved a hit-and-run trailer, a Mercedes-Benz C300, and a passenger bus.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim and other members of his football academy were travelling in a convoy of two vehicles to honour an scheduled match. Chaos ensued when a trailer reportedly veered across the median from the opposite lane, clipping the Mercedes-Benz (with registration number SMK-878KX) and forcing it into a violent collision with the accompanying bus.
”We were going for a match. We just saw a trailer cross from the other side and hit this Benz, then it hit the bus,” an eyewitness who requested anonymity recounted. “Only one person died in the car while the rest of us survived. Everyone in the bus is fine, too. The trailer driver fled with his vehicle afterwards.”
While occupants of the bus and other academy members escaped unhurt, the footballer in the Mercedes-Benz sustained fatal injuries. The luxury vehicle was left badly mangled from the impact.
