US Vice President JD Vance has blamed the war with Iran and America’s relationship with Israel for the Republican Party’s devastating losses in the midterm elections, revealing that voters who backed Donald Trump in 2024 switched to the Democratic Party in 2026.
The statement was posted on X on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, a day after Democrats swept both chambers of Congress, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE ADMISSION
Vance was unequivocal about the cause of the defeat. “The reason we lost is the war,” he wrote. “The president himself said so last night”.
He argued that the election results reflected dissatisfaction with the administration’s foreign policy rather than low Republican voter turnout.
“The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he said .
THE FOUR DEMANDS
Citing polling data from a pollster he respected, Vance listed the top four answers from voters who had abandoned the Republican ticket.
“End the war
. Focus on cost of living/inflation
. Put America First
. Change our relationship to Israel,” he wrote .
He challenged supporters of the military campaign to defend its political cost.
“If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so.
Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest,” he said .
“But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there” .
TRUMP’S RESPONSE
Speaking to reporters later on Wednesday, President Trump said Vance’s statement was “largely true,” but stood by his decision to launch the attacks.
“I can tell you that as far as that war is concerned, I would have done nothing different,” Trump said .
Earlier, speaking to Fox News after the results came in, Trump said: “People agree with what I’m doing on Iran, but they really probably weren’t willing to do the short-term consequence of paying more for gasoline”.
He also claimed Republicans “would have won easily if I was on the ballot” .
THE POLITICAL CONTEXT
The war, now in its ninth month, has driven up energy prices and added to concerns about the cost of living, which dominated the election campaign.
Prices increased by 3.7% in the year to September, driven higher by fuel and energy prices.
In exit polls, nearly 80% of voters said inflation had caused them hardships, with 60% blaming Trump’s policies for the rising cost of living.
Vance, who has long questioned US intervention abroad, appeared to be publicly distancing himself from the deeply unpopular conflict ahead of a potential 2028 presidential run .

WHY IT MATTERS
Vance’s statement is a remarkable admission from a sitting Vice President. He is not defending the war. He is not defending the President’s foreign policy.
He is saying, in plain terms, that the Republican Party lost because of a war that the American people did not want and a relationship with Israel that voters are increasingly questioning.
For Trump, the statement is an acknowledgment that his signature foreign policy decision cost his party control of Congress.
For Vance, it is a calculated move to position himself for 2028, distancing himself from a conflict that has damaged the Republican brand.
The midterms are over. The recriminations have begun. And the Republican Party is facing an identity crisis that will shape its future for years to come. ValidViewNetwork reports.
