A $2.8 million private jet carrying nine people has crashed into a mobile home park in South Florida, killing all on board, after the crew issued a desperate mayday call describing a catastrophic loss of control.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, about 6km south of the airport in West Palm Beach, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE FINAL MOMENTS
Chilling air traffic control audio captured the panic of a female crew member aboard the Learjet 60, registered as N722BD, as the aircraft plummeted .
“We’re descending 8000ft Mayday Mayday 10,000ft per minute,” she can be heard screaming. “Declaring emergency … descending 20,000ft per minute … we’re going to crash into the ground. We are banking 60 degrees, we are going to die, holy f–k we’re out of time”.
The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas en route to the Bahamas before disaster struck.
Data from Flightradar showed the jet flying at 41,000ft as it crossed the Florida peninsula near Naples before descending to 35,000ft. Shortly after, the aircraft turned east, ascended slightly, then nose-dived at about 32,000ft per minute.
The jet slammed into the ground at an estimated speed of 595km/h.
THE SCENE
Dashcam video from motorists travelling along South Military Trail in Greenacres shows the jet slicing through the overcast sky at high speed.
Video from the scene shows thick black smoke billowing into the air and debris scattered across the roadway, with the force of the collision carving a deep crater where a mobile home once stood.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue declared it a “mass-casualty incident,” with multiple surrounding roads closed as emergency crews secured the scene.
