Olujuwon Obasanjo, the son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has joined the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement as Special Adviser on Political Affairs, pledging to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The endorsement was made during a visit to the movement’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, where he was received by its National Coordinator, Sunday Asuku, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE PLEDGE
Olujuwon described his appointment as an honour and privilege, commending the group for its grassroots mobilisation, community outreach, and efforts to promote the activities of the Tinubu administration.
He said he had followed the movement’s activities for some time and was impressed by its efforts, adding that he was prepared to contribute to its objectives and the President’s second-term ambition.
“President Tinubu has started on a good note, making it necessary for Nigerians, particularly young people, to join hands to sustain the ongoing reforms and ensure continuity in governance,” he said. “Again, you will notice that the country has made progress in areas including salary payments, infrastructure development and investment opportunities. And I think the gains recorded should be sustained.”
He expressed confidence that sustained support for Tinubu would enable the administration to consolidate its achievements and deliver more dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
THE FAMILY DYNAMIC
Olujuwon disclosed that he has been a member of the All Progressives Congress since 2014, noting that members of his family were free to pursue different political interests without hostility.
He said his family “allows members to hold independent political views and pursue our political interests without animosity”.
His father, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has been a vocal critic of the Tinubu administration, particularly on economic policy and debt. In a recent speech, he declared that “debt is worse than leprosy,” directly contradicting Tinubu’s assertion that borrowing is not leprosy.
THE MOVEMENT’S RESPONSE
Welcoming him to the movement, Asuku described Olujuwon as an experienced political figure whose leadership and governance background would strengthen the organisation’s mobilisation efforts.
“We are certain his experience and understanding of political mobilisation would strengthen the movement and advance its activities across the country,” he said.
WHY IT MATTERS
The endorsement of Tinubu by the son of his most prominent critic is a political irony that speaks to the complexity of Nigerian politics.Olusegun Obasanjo is one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s history.
His criticisms of Tinubu carry weight, particularly in the South-West. But his son has chosen a different path, aligning himself with the President’s re-election campaign.
For Tinubu, the endorsement is a symbolic victory. It suggests that even within the Obasanjo family, there is no unanimity on the President’s record. For the Obasanjo dynasty, it is a reminder that political loyalties are not always inherited.
The father criticises. The son supports. And the 2027 election will determine whose vision prevails. ValidViewNetwork reports.
