A trusted home care worker has been sentenced to three years behind bars after covert security cameras exposed her stealing £8,000 worth of cherished jewellery from an elderly and vulnerable client.
Lara Jones, 50, of Cowden Pound Road, Mark Beech, was handed the prison term at Guildford Crown Court following a trial that ended in a guilty verdict for three counts of burglary.
The investigation began to unfold in late November 2025 when the victim’s family noticed missing valuables alongside a stray earring left abandoned near the top of the stairs. Growing suspicious of the sudden disappearance of family heirlooms, the family took the discreet step of installing hidden cameras inside the elderly resident’s bedroom.
The covert setup caught Jones in the act during her very second shift on November 26, 2025. Footage showed her rifling through personal drawers and wardrobes before pocketing the high-value pieces.
Armed with the video evidence, the victim’s daughter reported the betrayal to local authorities on December 3, 2025. Police swiftly moved in, arresting Jones and successfully recovering the stolen items during a subsequent search of her property.
In a victim impact statement, the family expressed profound distress over the ordeal, describing the violation of trust in a sanctuary meant to offer safety and support as deeply devastating.
Despite pleading not guilty throughout legal proceedings, Jones was convicted and ultimately ordered to pay a £228 victim surcharge alongside her custodial sentence
