Judiciary Hands Down Strict Sentence in Landmark EFCC Prosecution
A Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja has delivered a landmark judgment, sentencing a former commercial bank employee, Christopher Jackson Edeh, to a total of 39 years’ imprisonment for orchestrating an elaborate N2.7 billion cyber-enabled financial fraud.
Justice O.O. Abike-Fadipe handed down the sentence following a rigorous trial spearheaded by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Edeh, who originally stood before the court upon an initial arraignment on February 28, 2024, faced a total of nine counts revolving around fraudulent false accounting and unauthorized computer system access.
A Web of Deception Spanning Major Corporate and Public Accounts
Court proceedings unveiled a sophisticated scheme in which the convict systematically manipulated and altered official bank account profiles belonging to high-profile institutional clients and state-backed entities.
The compromised accounts spanned critical sectors of the economy and public administration, including:
- The Kano State Government Power Intervention Fund
- NNPC Trading Limited
- Stallion Vision Limited
- The Lagos State Government Blue Line project
- The State Contributory Pension Account
- Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University
Investigators demonstrated how the former banker exploited internal access privileges to redirect funds and execute illicit transactions with the deliberate intent to defraud the respective institutional stakeholders.
Prosecution Secures Conviction Beyond Reasonable Doubt
During the trial proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Z.B. Atiku, presented a robust case by deploying three key witnesses alongside a comprehensive compilation of documentary evidence. This evidentiary trail effectively dismantled the defense’s strategy, which relied on the testimony of a single witness.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Abike-Fadipe ruled that the anti-graft agency had successfully established its case beyond any reasonable doubt, leading to a guilty verdict across all nine counts.
Sentencing Breakdown
In determining the punishment, the court exercised strict judicial resolve against white-collar financial crimes:
- Counts 1 to 7 (Fraudulent False Accounting): The convict received five years’ imprisonment for each count, delivered without the option of a fine.
- Counts 8 and 9 (Unauthorized Computer Access): The court handed down two years’ imprisonment for each count, similarly without an option of a fine.
To maintain judicial proportionality, the presiding judge ordered that all the custodial sentences run concurrently, meaning the convict will serve an effective term of five years behind bars, accompanied by severe professional and legal consequences.
