MOMBASA, Kenya — A dramatic security intervention unfolded in Jomvu Sub-County as a national examination exercise turned into a fierce clash between religious conviction and a child’s right to education. Police arrested a 38-year-old mother after she locked her Grade 6 daughter inside their home to prevent her from sitting her Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).
The mother’s extreme action was triggered by the pupil’s assigned index number at High Step Academy, which contained the sequence “666.” Widely referenced in biblical theology as the “number of the beast”, the digits led the parent to label the assessment registration satanic and a grave spiritual threat to her child.
Police Force Door Open in Rescue Operation
The incident came to light on the second day of the national assessment when the candidate failed to report to school. Alarmed by her absence, the school’s headteacher, Bakari Mweruhe, alerted local education authorities and security teams.
A multi-agency security team, spearheaded by Jomvu Sub-County Police Commander Selinah Chirchir, rushed to the family’s residence. Upon finding the premises locked from the inside with the student trapped, officers were forced to break down the door to gain access.
“My child is being told to sit an examination, yet the assessment number is 666, which is forbidden in the Bible,” the mother protested to reporters before being cut short and taken into custody.
Reports from local authorities further revealed that the child’s father had also previously discouraged the student from taking the test, acting on warnings issued through a local pastor’s prophecy.
Child Safely Resumed Exam
Following the dramatic rescue, law enforcement and education officials safely escorted the minor back to school. Authorities ensured she was accommodated and given extra time to resume her national assessment.
The bizarre episode has ignited a broader national debate across Kenya concerning the delicate intersection of religious freedom, parental rights, and a minor’s protected constitutional right to education. Legal experts and child welfare advocates have strongly condemned the use of extreme measures that jeopardize a child’s academic future, emphasizing that institutional frameworks must take precedence in safeguarding basic educational milestones.
Police confirmed that the suspect remains in custody at Jomvu Police Station as investigations and expected legal proceedings continue.
