A fake lawyer Ebonyi case has ended in arrest.
The state police command says Ugwumba Francis Enyinnaya posed as a barrister for more than 11 years. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, announced the arrest in a statement on Tuesday.
Police say the 40-year-old appeared in court and prepared legal documents without ever being called to the Nigerian Bar.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the suspect has been charged to court.
THE PETITION THAT EXPOSED HIM
A petition alleged he collected ₦650,000 from Mr Chukwu David in March 2026 to process a street-naming request in Ohaozara Local Government Area.
He allegedly disappeared after receiving the money, and David petitioned the Commissioner of Police. Detectives began a discreet investigation.
WHAT POLICE SAY THEY FOUND
The suspect reportedly told investigators that he is not a lawyer. Police recovered bundles of court judgments, powers of attorney and deeds of conveyance he allegedly prepared for clients.
One outlet reported that a fake Nigerian Bar Association seal was also recovered.
ValidViewNetwork gathered that police have not named other victims.
A WARNING FOR THE PUBLIC
The police spokesperson said many people may have fallen victim. Commissioner Hope Urunwa Okafor commended the operatives and urged the public to verify credentials before hiring legal service providers.
Several.news Outlets differ on the length of the alleged practice, with some reporting “more than 10 years.” The police statement says over 11 years.
A land deed or power of attorney from a fake lawyer can collapse in court years later. Verifying a lawyer’s name with the Bar before paying costs little. The fake lawyer Ebonyi case shows what skipping that step can cost. ValidViewNetwork reports.
