The Oleshky ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has taken effect. It is a localised truce for aid and evacuation, not a general end to the war.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it stopped shelling toward Kherson from 4am Moscow time on Tuesday to prepare for the effort in Oleshky. Ukraine’s ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, confirmed Ukraine is honouring its commitments.
ValidViewNetwork reports that both sides have said this is not a comprehensive end to hostilities.
WHAT THE TRUCE COVERS
Russia has occupied Oleshky since February 2022. The US estimates 1,700 to 2,000 residents remain, facing shortages of food, medicine and supplies.
The White House said both nations agreed to temporarily stop military action there for humanitarian aid and a civilian evacuation through a safe passage.
Melania Trump said residents who wish to leave would go to their preferred destination in Russia or Ukraine. The truce is scheduled to end on Sunday.
WHO GETS THE CREDIT
The White House said Melania Trump secured the ceasefire and worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership on its terms.
The Vatican’s newspaper credited Pope Leo, who spoke to Putin on 16 October and to Zelenskyy on 19 October.
ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the two accounts conflict. Neither claim rules out the other.
WHAT NEXT
The Kremlin said the truce might set a precedent for similar localised ceasefires. A pause in one town cannot end a war. It can still save lives, and the Oleshky ceasefire will be judged by how many civilians get out. ValidViewNetwork reports.
