The hallowed halls of worship are meant to be a sanctuary for all, but for Nollywood actor Charles Born, a Sunday service in the Federal Capital Territory turned into an exercise in alienation—sparked entirely by a pair of sandals, trousers, and a vest.
Recounting the ordeal in a viral video that has ignited fiery debates across social media, the actor detailed how an uplifting morning at the Abuja branch of Celebration Church devolved into public embarrassment on Sunday, October 18.
According to Born, he had settled into the church’s second service after being warmly ushered to his seat by an official greeter. Preferring the aisle for the physical freedom it affords during intense sessions of worship and intercessory prayer, he felt comfortably situated. That comfort, however, was short-lived.
Midway through the service, a man approached him with a directive that caught him completely off guard: he was asked to vacate his row and move elsewhere.
”He initially mumbled something about the seat possibly being reserved,” Born shared, recalling the discomfiting encounter. “Then, he casually added that there might be a problem with how I was dressed.”
Clad casually in a vest, trousers, and sandals, the filmmaker and actor was left bewildered. The irony of being directed to a spot by a church usher, only to be singled out minutes later by another member of the internal team over his attire, left a bitter taste in his mouth. Rather than engage in a prolonged dispute inside the sanctuary, Born opted to quietly walk out of the service altogether.
The incident has since triggered widespread conversations online regarding dress codes in contemporary religious spaces. Posing a poignant question to the public, Born expressed profound disappointment that anyone could be made to feel unwelcome in a house of God purely based on personal appearance.
”Churches should be a place where everyone seeking to worship is embraced, regardless of what they have on,” he stated, noting that the shock of the encounter lingered long after he left the premises.
As the debate continues to trend, the episode serves as a fresh reminder of the ongoing cultural friction between traditional expectations of church decorum and the casual, expressive fashion choices of younger generations.
