A Toyota vehicle travelling against traffic slammed head-on into a motorcycle on Araromi Bridge along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in the early hours of Monday, sparking a blaze that left two people on the bike dead.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the overnight crash occurred on the bridge inward Agbara.
The agency reported a head-on collision involving a Toyota Camry saloon car driving the wrong way and a motorcycle; both vehicles were engulfed in flames. Two fatalities were confirmed. LASTMA officers are working to evacuate the burnt wreckage, and traffic on the corridor remained manageable at the time of their update.
Initial reports circulating online described the car as a Toyota Highlander and said the driver fled the scene after the impact. A comment under LASTMA’s post also questioned the vehicle identification, suggesting the wreckage resembled an SUV rather than a saloon. Official details from the traffic agency list a Camry and do not confirm a fleeing driver. Further clarification is expected as investigations continue.
The incident once again highlights the lethal risks of driving against traffic on Lagos roads. LASTMA has repeatedly warned motorists that such behaviour is a major cause of fatal crashes and has urged the public to obey traffic rules. Emergency responders continue recovery operations at the scene.
More details will be provided as they emerge.
