Former US President Barack Obama has accused the Trump administration of targeting Congresswoman Ilhan Omar because of her political views, describing the investigation and the raid on her home as an attempt to intimidate a political opponent.
The Obama Trump targeting Omar accusation came in a post on X on Sunday, marking a rare direct intervention by the former president into a contentious political controversy.
THE ACCUSATION
“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,” Obama wrote.
“But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”
He added: “The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president.”
THE FACTS OF THE CASE
Obama explained that Omar arrived in the US with her father when she was 12 and became a naturalised citizen after her father obtained US citizenship when she was 17.
Under US citizenship rules, it makes a difference whether someone is under 18 or not. Had Omar been 18 at the time of her father’s naturalisation, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately, Obama noted.
But because she was 17, she became a naturalised citizen automatically.
The Trump administration is seeking to deport Omar based on an unsubstantiated theory that she was 18 when her father was naturalised.
THE RAID
Last Monday, federal agents searched Omar’s home in the Washington area. The move drew heavy criticism, partly because of its timing shortly before the congressional elections, in which the congresswoman is seeking re-election.
Authorities also seized her phone and passport and issued subpoenas to some of her relatives.
The investigation centres on allegations that Omar or members of her family provided false information during their immigration process decades ago.
Omar has rejected the allegations and described the search as politically motivated.
OBAMA’S WARNING
Obama warned that the use of government power to intimidate political critics should concern Americans across party lines.
“The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views,” he wrote.
He added: “If this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her, or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.”

Obama’s intervention is significant because he rarely comments on current political controversies.
His decision to speak out on the Omar case signals that he views it as a fundamental threat to democratic norms, not merely a partisan dispute.
For Omar, the support of a former president is a powerful validation. For Trump, it is a high-profile rebuke from his predecessor. For Americans, it is a reminder that the rule of law and the protection of political dissent are not partisan issues—they are the foundation of democracy.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the White House did not immediately respond to Obama’s statement. The investigation into Omar continues.
