LUSAKA — Proceedings at the Chelstone Local Court descended into sheer disbelief this week when a contentious divorce hearing took a deeply bizarre turn, with a 36-year-old husband claiming he could spot his wife’s infidelity through biological “forensics”.
Trevor Banda left the packed courtroom gallery stunned when he interrupted his wife’s testimony to declare that her physical responsiveness was absolute proof she was sleeping with other men.
”Your Honour, I feel she is sleeping with other men because she gets wet before I touch her,” Banda proclaimed to a bewildered bench, arguing that a faithful woman should only show signs of arousal after direct physical contact from her lawful husband. “I cannot continue with such a woman.”
A Marriage Rocks on Shaky Foundations
The dramatic courtroom showdown was initiated by 23-year-old Loveness Mukwato, who dragged her husband to court seeking a formal dissolution of their marriage. Mukwato claimed she had simply grown exhausted by the relentless harassment of her husband’s alleged mistress, a woman named Patricia, who reportedly called daily with death threats.
Furthermore, Mukwato fired back with a devastating counter-accusation, alleging that she once caught Banda red-handed in bed with her own cousin mere days after she had suffered a traumatic miscarriage.
However, Banda countered that the rot in their union began in 2024—five years after they tied the knot in 2019—following Mukwato’s employment at a popular Lusaka supermarket chain. According to the disgruntled husband, her new job introduced her to a lifestyle of clubbing, merchandise trading, and affluent boyfriends.
”She finally confessed that she had a boyfriend who was making more money than me. She then stopped giving me a chance to support our child,” Banda lamented to the court. He also claimed he intercepted a phone call where his wife dismissed him as “just a baby daddy, not a husband.”
The Hammer Falls
Presiding Magistrate Charity Milambo observed that the couple harbored zero mutual affection and had long crossed the point of no return.
In her final judgment, Magistrate Milambo formally dissolved the volatile union, casting blame on the tender age at which Mukwato had originally entered the marriage.
”Marriage is not for the young. The girl got married when she was too young, at the age of 16, and you knew that you were older than her when you married her,” Magistrate Milambo noted.
Due to mutual infidelity and misconduct, the court denied Mukwato any spousal maintenance. However, Banda was ordered to cough up K500 monthly in child support starting immediately to cater to their shared offspring.
