ASABA, DELTA STATE — The Federal High Court sitting in Asaba has handed down prison sentences to five individuals in a sweeping legal clampdown on the rampant social habit of spraying currency.
Justice F. A. Olubanjo delivered the strict verdict, convicting the offenders on a one-count charge that underscores the federal government’s zero-tolerance stance on currency desecration.
The convicts have been identified as Ekweozor Divine, Udumeluo Godwin Chukwuebuka, Kennedy Uwadia, Godstime Ogie Eghosa, and Bright Barry Imade.
The Legal Hammer Falls
According to case details brought forward by the prosecution, the group’s public display of throwing and spraying cash ran foul of national financial laws. Their actions directly contravened Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, and are heavily punishable under Section 21(1) of the same legislative framework.
The law explicitly criminalizes currency abuse—including spraying, dancing on, soiling, or mutilating the naira during weddings, birthdays, burials, and other public merrymakings.
A Strong Signal to Partygoers
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has continued to step up its surveillance and enforcement against the desecration of the country’s legal tender. While the specific lengths of the prison terms were not immediately detailed in the commission’s official bulletins, legal analysts note that these convictions send an unyielding message to citizens.
Despite repeated warnings and past crackdowns by anti-graft agencies targeting socialites and celebrity cross-dressers alike, the habit of spraying cash at upscale events has remained stubborn. This latest ruling from the Asaba bench, however, proves that the judiciary is prepared to lock away offenders, turning what was once considered harmless party fun into a serious ticket behind bars.
