Five people have been arraigned before the Ota Magistrate Court in Ogun State over their alleged involvement in an attack on police officers during which a handcuffed suspect reportedly escaped from custody.
The incident occurred on October 2, 2026, around the The Bells area of Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, after a police patrol team reportedly intercepted a man allegedly found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Ogun State Police Command said the officers were conveying the suspect to the station when they were allegedly ambushed by a group of people armed with cutlasses, stones and bottles.
The confrontation reportedly left some officers injured and the police operational vehicle damaged, while the suspect being conveyed to the station escaped.
ValidViewNetwork reports that five suspects have subsequently been arrested and brought before the court, while the police say efforts are continuing to apprehend other people allegedly involved in the incident.
POLICE PATROL INTERCEPTS SUSPECT
According to the police account, the incident began when officers on patrol intercepted a man around The Bells area. The man was allegedly found with a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The officers arrested and handcuffed him before setting out to convey him to the police station. It was during the journey, according to the command, that the officers were allegedly confronted by a group of people.
The police said the group attacked the officers with cutlasses, stones and bottles.
OFFICERS INJURED, POLICE VEHICLE DAMAGED
The Ogun State Police Command said some of its personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation. The command also alleged that the attackers damaged the operational vehicle being used by the patrol team.
In the confusion that followed, the handcuffed suspect reportedly escaped. The incident subsequently triggered an intelligence-led operation by the command to identify and arrest those allegedly responsible.
FIVE SUSPECTS ARRESTED
The five suspects arrested by the police were identified as:
— Morenikeji Badmus, 36
— Adedoja Segun, 40
— Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49
— Mike Stephen, 28
— David Odeh, 32
The police said the arrests followed intelligence gathered during the investigation into the attack.
The suspects were subsequently brought before the Ota Magistrate Court.
ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the five defendants are facing allegations connected to the October 2 incident, but the allegations remain subject to determination by the court.
CHARGES BEFORE OTA MAGISTRATE COURT
The suspects were arraigned on charges bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The charges relate to the alleged attack on the officers and the circumstances surrounding the escape of the handcuffed suspect.
Their arraignment means the allegations have formally entered the judicial process. It does not, however, amount to a finding of guilt against any of the defendants. The prosecution will be required to establish its case through the appropriate legal process.
POLICE SEARCHING FOR OTHER SUSPECTS
The Ogun State Police Command said its investigation had not ended with the arrest of the five defendants. According to the command, other people allegedly involved in the attack fled the scene and efforts were ongoing to apprehend them.
The police have also not publicly provided further details on whether the suspect who escaped from custody during the confrontation has been rearrested.
That remains one of the outstanding issues arising from the incident.
COMMISSIONER WARNS AGAINST CONFRONTING POLICE
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, said the safety of police officers carrying out lawful duties remained a priority for the command.
Ojajuni urged members of the public to avoid physical confrontation with law enforcement personnel. He advised anyone with grievances against police officers or other security personnel to use established legal and administrative channels rather than resorting to violence.
The commissioner’s warning comes against the background of the reported attack, in which the police said officers were injured and an operational vehicle damaged.

The case highlights the risks that can arise when attempts to enforce the law turn into physical confrontations between security personnel and members of the public.
The alleged escape of a suspect who was already handcuffed also raises questions about the security arrangements used when arrested persons are being transported.
At the same time, the court process provides an opportunity for all sides to have their positions tested through evidence rather than competing claims.
ValidViewNetwork authoritatively reports that the five suspects have been arraigned over allegations arising from the October 2 confrontation in Ota, while the police investigation remains ongoing and additional arrests may follow.
The case also reinforces the importance of allowing lawful institutions to handle disputes involving arrests and police conduct. Allegations against the defendants must be tested in court, just as complaints against police officers should be addressed through lawful oversight and accountability mechanisms rather than violence.
