The Nigerian Army has taken over the entire stretch of the Old Oyo National Park in Oyo State, converting the vast forest area into a military training ground following the abduction and subsequent rescue of more than 40 schoolchildren and their teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

The General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major-General Auwalu Mahmuda, disclosed the development on Wednesday while receiving members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, at the division’s headquarters in Ibadan.

Mahmuda said the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shuaibu, had directed the division to use the national park as a military training site.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the move represents a significant change in the security posture around one of the largest forested areas in the region.

ORIIRE ABDUCTION TRIGGERED MILITARY RESPONSE

The GOC linked the decision directly to the recent abduction of pupils, children and teachers in Oriire. The victims were later rescued, but the incident exposed the vulnerability of communities and schools located close to expansive forest corridors.

According to the Army, using the park as a training ground will allow troops to operate more extensively in the difficult terrain while denying criminals the opportunity to establish bases inside the forest.

Mahmuda said the occupation would make it difficult for kidnappers and other criminals to use the extensive forest as a hideout.

VAST FOREST TO BECOME MILITARY TRAINING AREA

The Old Oyo National Park covers a large expanse of forest and savannah and has historically served as an important conservation landscape.

Its terrain, however, can also provide cover for criminal groups operating far from major urban centres. The Army’s decision means troops will now conduct training exercises within the park, effectively increasing the military’s presence in an area that criminals could otherwise exploit.

The GOC said the park had already been taken over for that purpose, indicating that the measure is not merely a future proposal.

ARMY SEEKS TO DENY CRIMINALS FOREST COVER

Security agencies have repeatedly faced difficulties combating kidnapping in areas where criminals exploit forests and difficult terrain as escape routes.

The Army’s latest strategy is therefore based on the principle that sustained military presence can reduce the usefulness of such areas as criminal sanctuaries.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the decision followed the Oriire kidnapping and the subsequent rescue of the victims, according to the GOC’s account reported by multiple Nigerian news outlets.

The approach also gives troops an opportunity to train in the same type of terrain in which they may be required to conduct real operations.

SECURITY AND CONSERVATION QUESTIONS

The development is likely to generate wider discussion about the relationship between national security and conservation.

Old Oyo National Park is not merely an empty forest. It is a protected ecosystem with wildlife, vegetation and archaeological significance. Military training in such an environment therefore requires proper coordination with relevant conservation authorities to ensure that security operations do not unnecessarily damage sensitive habitats.

At the same time, the recent kidnapping incident demonstrates the security risks that can emerge when large forest areas become difficult for authorities to monitor.

COMMUNITY SAFETY REMAINS THE PRIORITY

For residents of communities around the park, the immediate concern is security. The abduction of schoolchildren and teachers has shown how quickly insecurity can affect education, family life and economic activity.

The military takeover is expected to provide a stronger security presence and reduce the possibility of criminals using the forest as an operational base.

ValidViewNetwork authoritatively reports that the Army’s stated objective is to prevent kidnappers and other criminals from using the Old Oyo National Park as a hideout while strengthening the operational readiness of troops.

The challenge now is to ensure that the increased military presence produces sustained security for surrounding communities while the ecological and protected status of the national park is also respected.
