For Joanna Yakubu, the Nigerian Air Force flight that carried Flight Lieutenant I.S. Bako was supposed to be another journey, not the last time she would hear from the man she loved.
Her grief has now become one of the most personal human stories emerging from the Ondo air disaster.
THE FINAL MESSAGE
Joanna, Bako’s partner, mourned the officer in a social media post following the crash. She recalled that Bako had told her he was travelling to Abuja but had not indicated that he would not return.
Her words captured the shock of families and loved ones left behind after the crash.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Bako was among the crew members aboard NAF 931, which crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State.
The Nigerian Air Force identified him as one of the aircraft’s co-pilots.
A ROUTINE MISSION THAT ENDED IN TRAGEDY
NAF 931 was conducting a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when it crashed. The aircraft carried 25 people, including five crew members and 20 passengers.
No survivor was found.
The Nigerian Air Force has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
THE HUMAN COST
Beyond the official numbers are families who received devastating news without warning. Bako’s story illustrates that human dimension.
For military personnel, routine missions often involve risks that are understood professionally but may remain invisible to families until tragedy strikes.
ValidViewNetwork can confirm that Bako was not simply a name on an official casualty list. He was a serving officer, a co-pilot and a loved one whose sudden death has left people close to him struggling with the finality of the crash.
The same grief is being experienced by the families of the other 24 victims.
INVESTIGATION STILL NEEDED
The emotional circumstances surrounding Bako’s final conversation should not be confused with evidence about the cause of the crash.
There is currently no basis for treating his partner’s recollection as an explanation for what happened to NAF 931.
The cause of the crash remains a matter for investigators.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the most meaningful tribute to the victims will ultimately be a transparent investigation capable of establishing what happened, why it happened and what can be done to prevent a recurrence.
Behind every aviation casualty figure is a family waiting for answers. Those answers must be pursued with evidence, professionalism and respect for the dead.
