‘PILOT STEERED PLANE AWAY FROM IGBOKODA’, SAYS MONARCH
The Nigerian Air Force aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, may have caused far greater destruction had it come down inside the community, the traditional ruler of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, has said.

The monarch commended the pilot for what he described as a decisive manoeuvre that took the aircraft away from the populated part of the town before it crashed into the difficult swampy terrain.
His comments came as recovery operations continued at the crash site following the October 5 tragedy, which killed all 25 people aboard the Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, NAF 931. The aircraft was travelling from Benin City to Lagos when it crashed in the Igbokoda area.
PILOT’S LAST MANOEUVRE
Speaking about the incident, Oba Odidiomo said the community had been deeply shaken by the crash but believed the pilot’s actions prevented a potentially larger civilian catastrophe. The monarch said residents had observed the aircraft before it went down and that available accounts indicated it was heading towards the community before changing direction.
The Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa also stated that witnesses told him the aircraft appeared to be heading towards the community before the pilot manoeuvred it away and into a swampy area.
The monarch’s assessment is therefore centred on the location of the crash rather than an established finding on what caused the aircraft to lose control.
The exact cause of the crash remains subject to investigation.
25 PEOPLE KILLED IN CRASH
The NAF ATR-42 aircraft, with registration number NAF 931, crashed on Monday, October 5, during a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos.
The Nigerian Air Force later confirmed that 25 people were aboard, comprising 20 passengers and five crew members. There were no survivors.
The aircraft came down near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, with a substantial portion of the wreckage believed to have entered the swamp and surrounding water.
The initial casualty figure announced by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo was 32, but the Nigerian Air Force subsequently clarified that 25 people were on board.
President Bola Tinubu declared three days of national mourning and directed the Nigerian Air Force to commence a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
COMMUNITY RESIDENTS RUSHED TO CRASH SITE
Odidiomo said residents reacted immediately after seeing the aircraft go down. According to him, people were dispatched to the area to determine what had happened and whether anyone might have survived.
Two fishermen who were in the vicinity reportedly helped residents locate the precise crash site. The difficult terrain, however, complicated the initial response.
The crash occurred in a swampy and waterlogged area that was difficult to reach, slowing access for residents, security personnel and recovery teams.
Residents initially went to the location with tools, hoping they might find survivors trapped inside the aircraft.Instead, they encountered wreckage and remnants of the aircraft, with portions submerged in the surrounding water.

Recovery teams have faced significant challenges because of the swampy environment.
ValidViewNetwork had earlier reported that the main recovery effort was continuing in the difficult terrain, while large sections of the aircraft were being recovered.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also said thick mangroves, deep mud and murky water had made the operation difficult. He disclosed that amphibious equipment was being deployed to improve access to the area.
The difficult conditions have made the recovery of the wreckage a painstaking operation, with authorities and local residents working around waterways and unstable ground.
MONARCH: COMMUNITY WILL SUPPORT RECOVERY
Odidiomo said the community was prepared to assist the authorities with the recovery operation despite the difficult circumstances. He said local discussions had included possible ways of reaching portions of the submerged wreckage where conventional methods might prove inadequate.
The monarch’s remarks underline the role played by Igbokoda residents in the immediate response to the crash, particularly in identifying and reaching the remote location where the aircraft came down.
The community’s involvement, however, remains complementary to the official recovery and investigation process.
WHAT REMAINS UNKNOWN
While the location of the crash and the number of people killed have been established, the precise sequence of events that led to the aircraft’s final descent remains under investigation.
There have been reports of an unusual engine sound before the crash, while the aircraft also disappeared from radar before the accident. Earlier reports by ValidViewNetwork stated that local witnesses heard a sound resembling thunder shortly before the aircraft went down.
These accounts do not, on their own, establish the cause of the accident. The investigation will be expected to examine the aircraft’s mechanical condition, flight data, cockpit communications, weather conditions, air-traffic records and other available evidence before any definitive conclusion is reached.
A TRAGEDY THAT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE
For Igbokoda, the crash represents two painful realities at once: the loss of 25 people and the possibility that the consequences could have been even more devastating had the aircraft fallen into the heart of the community.
Oba Odidiomo’s tribute to the pilot therefore reflects the perspective of a community that witnessed a national tragedy unfold on its doorstep while narrowly avoiding a potentially wider civilian disaster.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the monarch’s comments should not be interpreted as an official determination of the cause of the crash.
They are an assessment of the aircraft’s final trajectory and its location of impact, while the formal investigation into the accident continues.
The Ondo crash also highlights the importance of rigorous aviation safety investigations, transparent recovery operations and the preservation of evidence after major accidents.
Beyond determining responsibility, such investigations are essential to ensuring that lessons from one tragedy are translated into measures that can prevent another.
