A major group of northern Islamic clerics has delivered a politically significant challenge to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to abandon his ambition to seek another term in 2027.
Their argument is rooted in insecurity, economic hardship and what they described as failures of governance.
THE KANO CALL
More than 1,000 Islamic clerics reportedly made the demand in a communiqué issued after a national conference in Kano.
The conference was titled “An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections.”
ValidViewNetwork reports that the gathering was organised under the umbrella of Ko Da Naka, in collaboration with the AFAQ Educational Foundation.
WHY THEY WANT TINUBU TO STEP ASIDE
The clerics cited killings, kidnappings and terrorism, particularly in the North-West. They also criticised the administration’s economic policies, including fuel subsidy removal, changes to the naira exchange-rate regime, electricity tariff increases and tax reforms.
According to the communiqué, the policies have increased hardship among ordinary Nigerians. The group also raised concern over the migration of Nigerian professionals, including doctors, teachers and engineers.
NOT A POSITION OF ALL NORTHERN MUSLIMS
The political significance of the statement should not be exaggerated. ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the call represents the position of the clerics who participated in the conference. It does not establish that all northern Muslims, Islamic scholars or northern communities share the position.
That distinction is essential in political reporting.
THE 2027 QUESTION
The clerics urged Nigerians to judge political candidates according to competence, integrity, experience and policies rather than ethnic, regional or partisan loyalties.
That argument places the debate within the broader question of how Nigerians will assess the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 election.
ValidViewNetwork authoritatively reports that the call is politically consequential but remains a demand from a particular organised group, not an electoral verdict.
The appropriate democratic response is neither to dismiss the criticism because it is politically inconvenient nor to treat it as evidence of a nationwide consensus.
In a democracy, governments must answer criticism with measurable results, while citizens retain the right to judge those results at the ballot box.
