Flying Officer IM Adeshina had barely begun his career in the Nigerian Air Force when tragedy ended it. Commissioned into the Nigerian Air Force on September 26, 2026, Adeshina had emerged as the Best Graduating Cadet of Branch Commission Course 3, marking him out among the most distinguished officers of his graduating set.
Nine days later, on October 5, he was among the 25 people killed when a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the young officer’s death has attracted widespread tributes because of the extraordinary brevity of the period between his commissioning and his death.
A PROMISING BEGINNING
Adeshina’s commissioning on September 26 was expected to mark the beginning of a long military career. His emergence as the best graduating cadet of Branch Commission Course 3 was an indication of his performance during training.
Photographs from the commissioning ceremony circulated after the crash, showing the young officer receiving recognition for his performance.
The achievement made his death particularly painful for relatives, colleagues and fellow members of his graduating course.
NINE DAYS LATER, TRAGEDY
On October 5, the Nigerian Air Force aircraft carrying Adeshina and 24 other people crashed in Igbokoda. The aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when contact with it was lost.
The NAF subsequently confirmed that there were 20 passengers and five crew members aboard the aircraft and that there were no survivors. The wreckage was later located near the Naval Base in Igbokoda.
A CAREER THAT HAD BARELY STARTED
For Adeshina, the tragedy came at the very beginning of the career for which he had trained. His commissioning had been the culmination of years of military preparation and professional ambition.
But rather than progressing through the ranks and serving the country as a trained military officer, his name has now become part of the roll of those who died in the crash.
MORE THAN A MILITARY CASUALTY
Behind the uniform was a young Nigerian whose death has affected family, friends, classmates and colleagues. The significance of his death goes beyond his professional designation. He had only just crossed the threshold into commissioned military service when his life was cut short.
The story has consequently resonated with Nigerians mourning the 25 victims of the Ondo crash.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUESThe circumstances surrounding the aircraft crash remain subject to investigation. Authorities will be expected to establish what caused the aircraft to crash and determine whether mechanical, operational, weather or other factors played a role.Until that process is completed, speculation about the precise cause should not be treated as fact.
ValidViewNetwork can confirm that Adeshina was commissioned on September 26 and died in the October 5 crash, making the interval between his commissioning and death only nine days.
His story is a painful reminder that behind military statistics are individual lives, families and dreams.
