The chilling case centers on Uloma Curry-Walker, whose elaborate murder-for-hire plot against her husband, Cleveland Fire Lieutenant William Walker, collapsed under the weight of police scrutiny and a glaring administrative oversight.
The couple had been married for a mere four months when Lieutenant Walker was ambushed and shot dead in the driveway of his Cleveland residence on November 3, 2013. Investigators soon uncovered a sinister motive rooted in desperation: Curry-Walker was drowning in mounting financial debt and fixated on securing her new husband’s lucrative life insurance policy.
According to court documents and prosecutors, Curry-Walker orchestrated the conspiracy by pulling her own family into the criminal enterprise. She allegedly enlisted her 17-year-old daughter and the teenager’s boyfriend, Chad Padgett, tasking them with finding an operative willing to execute the murder for a fee. The deadly commission bounced through multiple intermediaries before a gunman was finally retained to pull the trigger.
The pursuit of justice played out in the courtroom years later. In July 2017, following an intense 10-day trial, a jury delivered a definitive verdict, convicting Curry-Walker of aggravated murder, conspiracy, and felonious assault. The following month, a judge handed down a definitive sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The network of co-conspirators also faced severe legal reckoning, with the actual shooter sentenced to 23 years to life behind bars.
