Deadly Greed: Killer Bride Loses Insurance Payout to Ex-Wife

CLEVELAND, OHIO — What was meant to be a ruthless financial lifeline for a newlywed bride instead unraveled into a tragic life sentence—complete with a stunning final twist that left her empty-handed and her victim’s ex-wife enriched.

The chilling case centers on Uloma Curry-Walker, whose elaborate murder-for-hire plot against her husband, Cleveland Fire Lieutenant William Walker, collapsed under the weight of police scrutiny and a glaring administrative oversight.

The couple had been married for a mere four months when Lieutenant Walker was ambushed and shot dead in the driveway of his Cleveland residence on November 3, 2013. Investigators soon uncovered a sinister motive rooted in desperation: Curry-Walker was drowning in mounting financial debt and fixated on securing her new husband’s lucrative life insurance policy.

According to court documents and prosecutors, Curry-Walker orchestrated the conspiracy by pulling her own family into the criminal enterprise. She allegedly enlisted her 17-year-old daughter and the teenager’s boyfriend, Chad Padgett, tasking them with finding an operative willing to execute the murder for a fee. The deadly commission bounced through multiple intermediaries before a gunman was finally retained to pull the trigger.

The pursuit of justice played out in the courtroom years later. In July 2017, following an intense 10-day trial, a jury delivered a definitive verdict, convicting Curry-Walker of aggravated murder, conspiracy, and felonious assault. The following month, a judge handed down a definitive sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The network of co-conspirators also faced severe legal reckoning, with the actual shooter sentenced to 23 years to life behind bars.

Yet, the most bitter irony of the entire ordeal emerged long after the courtroom gavel fell. Despite her meticulously planned scheme to collect the policy funds, Curry-Walker’s ambition was completely thwarted by a simple oversight: Lieutenant Walker had never updated his beneficiary designations following his divorce. As a result, the entirety of the roughly $100,000 life insurance payout bypassed his murderous new bride entirely, landing directly in the hands of his ex-wife.
