British Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has condemned what she described as racist attacks against her after a former aide to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called her a “Nigerian scammer.”
Badenoch accused Reform UK politicians of exploiting her Nigerian background for political advantage, insisting that attempts to use her race against her would not succeed, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE ATTACK
The remarks were made by Raheem Kassam, a former aide to Farage, who posted a series of tweets attacking Badenoch as a “scammer” and highlighting her Nigerian background.
Kassam’s comments were not isolated. They reflect a pattern of race-baiting that has increasingly become a feature of British political discourse.
BADENOCH’S RESPONSE
Badenoch was unequivocal in her condemnation.
“I think they think that maybe using my race is a way for them to improve their standing,” she told ITV’s Good Morning Britain. “Britain is not a racist country and because it’s not a racist country, their racist attacks and using my race as an attack form is not going to work.”
She also called on Nigel Farage to condemn the attacks, but he has so far remained silent.
THE REFORM UK SILENCE
Reform UK defector Robert Jenrick refused to condemn the comments when asked, saying it was “not my place to police everybody’s tweets.
“His response was a tacit endorsement. If the party’s most prominent defector will not condemn racist attacks against a political opponent, what does that say about the party’s values?
WHY IT MATTERS
Badenoch is the leader of the Conservative Party, one of the two major parties in the United Kingdom. She is also a Black woman of Nigerian descent.
The attacks on her are not just personal. They are an attempt to delegitimise her leadership by weaponising her heritage. The implication is clear: she is not really British, she is a “Nigerian scammer,” and therefore her leadership is invalid.
Badenoch has refused to accept that framing. But the fact that such attacks are being made, and not condemned by senior figures in a rival party—is a warning about the state of British politics.
The leader of the Conservative Party has spoken. The question is whether anyone will listen. ValidViewNetwork reports.
