The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police sergeant and 18 others over the theft of underground pipelines.
The Abia pipeline vandalism case involves officials sworn to protect such assets. Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 143 Battalion arrested 19 suspects along the Nkwonta axis of Isuikwuato Local Government Area.
They were apprehended while attempting to load the stolen pipeline materials onto a heavy-duty trailer.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the Command’s confirmation followed.
WHO WAS ARRESTED
The sergeant is Daniel Emeka, attached to the Ovim Division. The others include a truck driver, a bus driver, a conductor, 12 loaders and two panel beaters or metal cutters. The mix suggests a chain, from cutters to loaders to haulers.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The suspects were handed to the NSCDC for further investigation and possible prosecution. ValidViewNetwork gathered that none has been charged in the coverage seen so far.
THE BACKDROP
The arrest came days after Isuikwuato’s mayor, Chinedu Ekeke, warned about rising vandalism. It included an attempted theft at the council’s pig farm and incidents involving high-tension cables.
Abia’s Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, also recently warned officers against arrest by proxy and extortion. He said the Command’s X-Squad would monitor officers’ conduct.
An officer in a theft ring damages public trust more than any thief. The Abia pipeline vandalism case will be judged by whether the sergeant faces the same court as the rest. ValidViewNetwork reports.
