Major League Soccer has fined Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi an undisclosed amount following a fiery 2-2 draw against the Philadelphia Union.
The league’s disciplinary committee announced the sanction after reviewing an incident deep in second-half stoppage time where Messi approached Philadelphia midfielder Quinn Sullivan near the center circle and struck him on the back of the neck during an off-the-ball exchange. MLS penalized the Argentine star for violating league policy regarding hands to the face, head, or neck of an opponent.
Inter Miami defender Ian Fray received a fine for a separate infraction during the chaotic conclusion of the match, which also featured late red cards for Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan. Philadelphia successfully appealed Cavan Sullivan’s red card, with the league’s Independent Review Panel unanimously rescinding the suspension.
Neither Messi nor Fray was suspended by the league, allowing both players to remain available for Inter Miami’s upcoming fixtures.
