OWERRI — A violent, mass uprising has thrown the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State, into severe chaos. Thousands of enraged students took to the streets to protest the brutal murder of a 100-level Cybersecurity student. The freshman was allegedly tortured and beaten to death by operatives of the campus ‘Man O’ War’ paramilitary volunteer corps.

The severe unrest, which erupted on Saturday morning, has turned the university campus into a virtual battlefield.

The Alleged Theft and Fatal Assault

Sources within the university community revealed that the tragic incident began when the unnamed 100-level student was accused of stealing ₦13,000. Rather than handing the suspect over to the institution’s official security department or the Nigeria Police Force, members of the Man O’ War volunteer unit reportedly took the law into their own hands.

The student was allegedly subjected to a horrific, prolonged physical assault while being held in a makeshift detention facility controlled by the paramilitary group. A distraught student leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described the severity of the ordeal:

”The boy was brutally beaten just because of an unverified accusation that he stole ₦13,000. Instead of handing him over to the university’s official security unit or the police for proper investigation, these Man O’ War elements locked him up and beat him like an animal until he died. This is pure murder, and we will not allow it to be swept under the rug.”

The freshman succumbed to severe internal injuries and was confirmed dead early Saturday morning, May 30, 2026.

Retaliation and Campus Arson

The confirmation of the student’s death sparked instant fury among the student body, triggering a swift and destructive retaliatory onslaught. Mobilizing in immense solidarity, crowds of chanting students systematically hunted down properties and assets belonging to the Man O’ War command on campus.

Graphic video footage circulating on X (formerly Twitter) captures the escalation of the violence. In several clips, angry mobs can be seen utilizing clubs and heavy stones to completely demolish the signposts, fencing, and fixtures of the paramilitary organization’s base.

The demonstration quickly escalated into arson as desperate students set multiple campus structures on fire. Plumes of thick, dark smoke were seen billowing heavily over university buildings, causing panic and forcing lecturers, staff, and administrators to flee the campus premises for their safety.

Outcry Over Campus Quasi-Security Groups

This tragic incident has reignited intense national debates regarding the heavy-handed operations of quasi-security and volunteer paramilitary groups across Nigerian tertiary institutions.

For years, students across various campuses have routinely complained about the unchecked authority of bodies like the Man O’ War, cadet units, and local campus vigilantes. Critics argue that these groups frequently operate completely outside the law, employing arbitrary detentions, torture, and raw physical violence under the guise of maintaining campus discipline.

The complete destruction of the FUTO Man O’ War base is viewed by many as a total rejection of these parallel security structures by the student population.

Silence from Law Enforcement

Efforts to obtain official statements regarding the deployment of anti-riot units to restore order or updates on the arrest of the implicated volunteer guards have been met with a wall of silence.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Imo State Command, Henry Okoye, did not respond to multiple phone calls placed to his verified mobile number. Furthermore, text messages seeking clarity on the killing and the subsequent riot remained unacknowledged at the time of publication.

As tension continues to grip the university, parents and the general public are calling on the management of FUTO and the Federal Ministry of Education to launch an immediate, transparent investigation to ensure justice is served for the deceased freshman.
