Port Harcourt – In a bold move to carry the message of salvation beyond the four walls of the church sanctuary, the General Overseer of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has taken the gospel “to the trenches” in Port Harcourt, staging a street‑level evangelism that has drawn both admiration and curiosity across the city.

Gospel on the streets

Pastor Ibiyeomie led a high‑energy outreach campaign through some of Port Harcourt’s busy streets and public spaces, engaging motorists, pedestrians, students, and residents with short but powerful messages anchored in repentance, divine love, and the possibility of a transformed life. The team, comprising church volunteers, youth corps members, and ministry workers, distributed tracts, preached on corners, and held improvised mini‑services at key intersections, turning the bustle of the city into a backdrop for evangelism.

According to ministry updates, the outreach is part of Salvation Ministries’ broader strategy to decentralise the pulpit and “meet people where they live and work.” Ibiyeomie, who also serves as Presiding Pastor of the church headquartered at Plot 17, Birabi Street, GRA, Phase 1, Port Harcourt, has frequently emphasised mission‑driven ministry as central to his vision.

Love‑motivated mission

Known for his passion for soul‑winning and social outreach, Ibiyeomie is described as a “love‑motivated philanthropist” whose evangelism is often paired with acts of compassion. In recent months, the ministry has been involved in housing projects for the elderly and other community‑development initiatives, reinforcing the idea that the gospel message is not only preached but also demonstrated in tangible ways.

Participants in the street outreach said the sessions were marked by prayers for healing, prosperity, and protection, as well as calls for moral and spiritual renewal in a city often caught between rapid urbanisation and social challenges. Some attendees reported signing decision‑cards or joining whatsapp groups for follow‑up discipleship, indicating that the campaign aimed not just at one‑time engagements but at creating a pipeline into the local church body.

Mixed public response

The gospel‑on‑the‑streets approach has however attracted mixed reactions. While many laud the boldness and visibility of the outreach, others have questioned the timing, location, and style of the public preaching, especially in heavily trafficked areas. Critics have also pointed to past controversies surrounding Ibiyeomie, including a widely circulated video in which he threatened to arrest and detain journalists who report on his sermons, raising concerns about the relationship between his ministry and the press.

Nonetheless, church leaders insist that the current campaign is apolitical and purely evangelistic, aimed at reaching drivers stuck in traffic, vendors working long hours, and students navigating the pressures of academic life. They argue that in a city where many people are “too busy for church,” taking the gospel into the streets is a necessary adaptation to modern realities.

Vision for the city

Ibiyeomie has in recent years positioned Salvation Ministries as more than a local congregation, describing it as a mission‑driven platform with a mandate to “take the hand of God” into every segment of society. The outreach in Port Harcourt is being framed as part of a larger “city‑wide harvest” strategy that includes school missions, university crusades, and targeted engagements with professionals and political leaders.

With Port Harcourt serving as both the operational base and spiritual hub of the ministry, the decision to “take the gospel to the trenches” underlines Salvation Ministries’ ambition to shape not only individual lives but also the broader moral and spiritual climate of Rivers State’s capital. As the campaign continues, observers will be watching to see how the blend of bold evangelism, community impact, and public controversy shapes the ministry’s footprint in the years ahead.
