President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, joined by Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke and Honourable Minister of Defence (HMOD) General Christopher Gwabin Musa, wrapped up a pivotal state visit to Ankara, Türkiye, on January 26-28, 2026, fortifying bilateral ties amid Nigeria’s push for military modernisation. The trip, building on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s 2021 visit to Nigeria, zeroed in on defence upgrades, technology transfers, and joint efforts against terrorism and banditry.

Key Bilateral Agreements
High-level talks between Tinubu and Erdoğan led to nine Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) spanning defence, trade, education, media, technology, energy, halal accreditation, diaspora policy, and diplomatic training. These pacts aim to elevate bilateral trade to $5 billion, enhance military training and intelligence sharing, and foster skills transfer for Nigeria’s Armed Forces. A standout is the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) to drive investments in security, energy, and manufacturing.

Defence Industry Engagements
Aneke and Musa toured Türkiye’s top defence firms—ASELSAN, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), and HAVELSAN—under the Secretariat of Defence, refining procurement for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, precision strikes, maintenance, and training. These sessions optimised ongoing deals, expanded R&D, and prioritised indigenous capacity building to deliver “smarter air power” for safer Nigerian communities. The focus aligns with countering asymmetric threats like insurgency through agile, tech-driven forces.

Strategic Impact
The visit signals Nigeria’s resolve to leverage global partnerships for operational self-reliance and national stability, as emphasised by Aneke. Outcomes promise advanced platforms, job creation via tech transfers, and reinforced security, assuring citizens of progress in a volatile region. This collaboration positions Türkiye as a key ally in Nigeria’s defence evolution.
