Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Abubakar stated that he was stepping down due to health-related challenges. President Tinubu has accepted his resignation and expressed gratitude for his service to the nation.
The President is expected to formally notify the Senate of a new nominee to replace Abubakar later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, previously served as the governor of Jigawa State for two consecutive terms between 2015 and 2023. He was appointed Minister of Defence by President Tinubu on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes at a sensitive time, as President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency and is expected to give further details on its scope soon.
The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on December 1, 2025.
