Veteran Nigerian comedian and actor Julius Agwu delivered one of the most raw and heartbreaking interviews of his career this week, dissolving into tears as he recounted the devastating fallout from his life-threatening brain surgery more than a decade ago.

Appearing on the Beer Parlour Talk Show episode titled “Julius Agwu — Back From The Brink,” the pioneer of “musicomedy” reflected on his groundbreaking contributions to Nigerian entertainment before the conversation turned deeply personal. Overwhelmed by emotion, Agwu removed his glasses, apologised repeatedly to the hosts, and struggled to hold back tears while describing how friends and a trusted associate abandoned him at his lowest point.

“My friends deserted me. This bishop that I’m talking about, he was managing me, he collected my money, they stopped talking to me.

It is well,” Agwu said, his voice cracking. In another moment of raw vulnerability, he added: “The God wey I dey serve, anybody wey get hand for wetin happen to me. I will be there and ask myself, what kind of life is this?”

The 53-year-old entertainer, known for blending music and comedy in a style he claims to have coined, spoke of the profound isolation that followed his medical ordeal. Many people he once considered close simply stopped communicating, leaving him to navigate recovery largely alone. He specifically alleged that a bishop who had been managing his affairs took his money before the relationship collapsed completely.

Agwu’s health crisis began in 2015. After suffering a severe seizure at home in Lagos that nearly claimed his life — doctors at one point prepared to take him to the mortuary before he regained consciousness — he travelled with his then-wife to Houston, Texas. There, at Park Plaza Hospital, scans revealed tumours in his brain, one reportedly the size of a golf ball. He underwent major surgery on May 12, 2015. The tumours were later confirmed to be benign.

The recovery was arduous. Agwu has previously described losing his memory and struggling to walk properly in the immediate aftermath. A year later, while in London for a show, he was rushed to hospital again and spent three months in a coma. The surgery and its complications also affected other aspects of his physical health and left lasting impacts on his memory and career trajectory.

During the recent talk-show appearance, hosts offered words of comfort, reminding the comedian of his enduring legacy in African comedy and assuring him that his contributions would outlive any temporary silence from former associates. Agwu expressed gratitude to the few who stood by him through the darkest days.

The emotional outpouring comes years after Agwu first publicly shared details of his near-death experience and subsequent recovery. Once a dominant force in Nigerian comedy with hit shows and tracks that defined an era, he has lived a more low-key life since the health battles that forced him to slow down.

In the end, Agwu’s message was one of hard-won resignation mixed with faith. Despite the pain of abandonment and financial betrayal at a time when he needed support most, he repeatedly affirmed, “It is well,” leaving those who turned their backs to a higher power.

His story serves as a stark reminder of how illness can expose the true nature of relationships — and how resilience, even when tested by both medical crisis and human disappointment, can still carry a person forward.
