Police Close In on NYSC Abductors, But Mines Block Rescue Operation

Security agencies have located the suspected camp where prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted in Imo State are being held, but police say they cannot immediately move into the area because intelligence indicates that the hideout may have been rigged with improvised explosive devices.

The development has introduced a new danger into the rescue operation, as security personnel must now balance the urgency of saving the victims with the risk of triggering explosives around the suspected camp.

Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, said drones were deployed after operatives tracked the abductors into the bush.

The drones reportedly provided coordinates for the suspected location.

Why the rescue has been delayed

According to Bosso, intelligence indicated that the camp had been mined with IEDs. He said security agencies were preparing to deploy heavy equipment, including bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers, as part of efforts to reach the victims without exposing them or rescuers to unnecessary danger.

ValidViewNetwork reports, the victims were among prospective corps members travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom when gunmen attacked two buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area of Imo State.

There has been some discrepancy in reports about the number abducted and subsequently rescued. Police said some victims were rescued, while later reports placed the number still held at 19. The figures should therefore be treated with caution until authorities provide a definitive account.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police Shehu Nadada to strengthen the rescue operation.

FAMILIES FACE RANSOM PRESSURE

The security operation is unfolding alongside a ransom crisis. Parents of 20 prospective corps members said kidnappers demanded N50 million per victim, amounting to N1 billion, and gave families a 24-hour ultimatum.

They appealed for help during a visit to Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

The reported ransom demand remains an allegation by the victims’ families and has not been established as a legally verified fact.

ValidViewNetwork reports, the immediate priority for authorities is the safe recovery of the victims, particularly because a poorly planned assault on a mined camp could put both hostages and security personnel at greater risk.

The episode also raises broader questions about highway security, intelligence gathering and the vulnerability of young Nigerians travelling to mandatory national service programmes. The safe rescue of the victims, rather than the speed of an operation for its own sake, should remain the overriding objective.
