Obasa Continues Lawsuit Against Meranda, Lagos Lawmakers Despite Tinubu’s Intervention

Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria – Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa is proceeding with his lawsuit against former Speaker Mojisola Meranda and other lawmakers, despite President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to mediate. This decision has reportedly caused confusion within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources indicate that APC leaders are puzzled by Obasa’s persistence in pursuing the legal action, particularly since Meranda reportedly accepted the party’s resolution and stepped aside from the speakership. According to an insider, Meranda willingly relinquished her position when instructed.

Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), Obasa’s legal representative, has confirmed that the case remains active in the Lagos State High Court, with a judgment anticipated soon. Fashanu has dismissed any possibility of Obasa withdrawing the case, stating that all arguments have been presented and the court will deliver its judgment in due course.

Otunba Henry Ajomale, former Lagos APC chairman and member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), remains optimistic that the case will be dropped soon. He stated that Tinubu’s intervention had restored order and suggested that a resolution might be reached during the Assembly’s next session.

The lawsuit stems from the leadership crisis on January 13, 2025, which led to Obasa’s removal and Meranda’s election as the first female Speaker. However, Obasa was reinstated after 49 days following intervention from the APC’s national leadership and Tinubu.

On March 12, 2025, Tinubu met with all 40 lawmakers in Abuja, reportedly to broker peace between Obasa and Meranda. Despite this, the Assembly has been inactive since March 3, 2025, raising concerns about a potential legislative standstill in Lagos State.
