Spain has been dealt a major squad setback ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixture, as midfielder Fabián Ruiz has left the national team’s training camp in Oviedo to fly to Paris.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Saturday that the 30-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star was granted permission to depart the camp to be present for the birth of his first child.
The sudden departure means Ruiz will play no part in La Roja’s crucial Nations League clash against the Czech Republic on Saturday evening at the Carlos Tartiere stadium.
Squad Constraints and Regulations
The unexpected family milestone leaves Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente short-handed in midfield. Because of strict UEFA regulations which mandate that a final matchday squad list must be locked in by midnight on the eve of a fixture, Spain are unable to draft a replacement player for the match.
Additional roster absentees—including Pau Cubarsí and Carlos Espí—further limit management’s immediate options to alter the squad setup for the night.
Strong Start to the Campaign
Ruiz’s absence will be deeply felt by the reigning world champions, given his stellar form in the opening rounds of the tournament. The midfielder started both of Spain’s previous group fixtures, helping spearhead strong victories—a 3-2 away win over England and a dominant 4-1 thrashing of Croatia.
The RFEF has not yet clarified whether Ruiz will rejoin the national team setup ahead of their upcoming fixture against Croatia in Split on Tuesday. For now, the squad and coaching staff remain focused on securing another vital three points in Group A3 as they cope without one of their midfield cornerstones.
