What better way could Nashville welcome visitors than by putting one of its most famous names on the city’s front door?
Dolly Parton is about to become part of the name of Nashville’s international airport.
The Nashville Airport Authority board has approved the renaming of Nashville International Airport in honour of the late country music icon, who died on August 25 at the age of 80.
The decision followed a campaign involving Tennessee officials and Nashville leaders to create a lasting public tribute to Parton.
But this is not simply a celebrity naming exercise.
It is about identity.
Why Dolly?
Dolly Parton was not merely a musician.She became one of the defining cultural figures associated with Tennessee.
Her career crossed music, film, television, business and philanthropy.
Her Imagination Library programme became particularly well known for providing free books to children.
So when Nashville decided to honour her, it was not simply honouring a singer.It was recognising someone whose name had become part of the identity of Tennessee itself.
The Metropolitan Nashville Council had already passed a resolution asking the airport authority to make an exception to its existing naming policy and rename the airport “Dolly Parton International Airport.”
The airport authority has now moved the proposal forward.

Airports are more than transport hubs.
They are often the first thing visitors encounter when they arrive in a city.
The name therefore matters.
A traveller arriving at “Dolly Parton International Airport” immediately receives a message about Nashville. Music matters here. Culture matters here.
And one woman helped carry that culture far beyond Tennessee.
There is also something interesting about the choice.
Airports are frequently named after presidents, political leaders and historical figures.
Nashville is effectively saying that a cultural figure can deserve the same public honour.
That may be especially fitting for a city whose international reputation is deeply tied to music.

The renaming will not erase Nashville’s history.
The airport will retain its familiar BNA airport code, meaning the practical identity used by travellers will remain intact even as the public name changes.
The bigger change is symbolic.
Every passenger arriving at the airport will encounter a name associated with a woman who spent decades turning music into a global language.
Dolly Parton died only recently.
But Nashville appears to have decided that it does not need to wait decades before deciding how it wants to remember her.
Some legacies are written in books.
Some are placed in museums.
Others are placed at the entrance to a city.
