ABUJA – In a scathing critique that signals a deepening rift within the political class, the former Minister of Interior and erstwhile Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has labeled President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda a “scam.”
Aregbesola, a once-loyal ally of the President, broke his silence on Tuesday to express profound dissatisfaction with the current trajectory of the nation. Speaking at a high-level engagement, the former minister argued that the administration has failed to deliver on its foundational promises, citing the unchecked escalation of insecurity and a biting economic crisis as evidence of “leadership failure.”
A Call for Resignation
Aregbesola’s rhetoric took a sharp turn as he moved beyond policy criticism to demand the President’s exit. He asserted that the administration’s inability to secure the lives of Nigerians or stabilize the plummeting value of the Naira has rendered its continued stay in power untenable.
”The ‘Renewed Hope’ we were promised has turned into a mirage,” Aregbesola stated. “You cannot offer hope while the people are hunted by bandits and crushed by an economy in freefall. When a government can no longer fulfill the primary purpose of the state—which is the security and welfare of the people—it has lost its mandate.”
Economic and Security Woes
The former minister’s remarks come at a time of heightened national anxiety. Despite various government interventions, inflation remains at record highs, and the cost of living has pushed millions more into poverty. On the security front, recent spikes in kidnappings and insurgent activities in the North and Middle Belt have fueled public outcry.
Aregbesola’s “scam” label targets the core branding of the Tinubu presidency, suggesting that the reforms touted as the path to recovery are instead exacerbating the suffering of the masses.

Political Implications
This public fallout is expected to send shockwaves through the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). For decades, Aregbesola was considered a cornerstone of Tinubu’s political machinery in the South-West. However, their relationship has soured significantly in recent years, starting with the internal leadership tussles in Osun State.
As of the time of this report, the Presidency has yet to issue a formal rebuttal, though sources within the Villa describe the comments as “unfortunate and distracting” during a period of “necessary national restructuring.”
