The President-General of the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, has strongly defended his organization’s endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an interview following the CBCN synod in Abuja, Kawas dismissed accusations from political detractors labeling him and other participating clergymen as “fake bishops” due to their shift in political alignment. He addressed allegations that his support was financially motivated, emphasizing that his previous aggressive mobilization and campaign efforts for Peter Obi during the 2023 elections were conducted entirely without financial backing or material reward from the former candidate.
”I supported Peter Obi at the initial stage of his presidential ambition and went with him everywhere in Nigeria, and he never gave me $1 or ₦1,” Kawas stated, adding that he personally funded the travel expenses of fellow clergymen who joined him on the campaign trail.
Defending the conference’s current stance, Kawas pointed out that his extensive history of political engagement spans decades, having previously thrown his weight behind several prominent political figures, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, without facing accusations of compromised integrity.
The CBCN officially backed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, citing deliberate efforts by the administration to balance religious interests, foster inclusion, and appoint Christians to strategic government positions—despite initial concerns over the ruling party’s historic same-faith ticket.
