WASHINGTON — In what federal authorities are calling the opening salvo of a large-scale enforcement campaign, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a nationwide sweep targeting unauthorized immigrants accused of defrauding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the operation, emphasizing that federal food assistance resources are meant exclusively for eligible citizens and qualifying populations.
”Illegal aliens who have no right to be here in the first place are the last people who should be using SNAP benefits and other forms of welfare,” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a sharp rebuke. “These programs are for Americans only. Even non-violent illegal alien crime can still have devastating consequences when they’re defrauding the American taxpayer.”
Initial Arrests Highlighted by DHS
As part of the rollout, federal officials disclosed a preliminary group of arrests spanning multiple states, noting that those detained so far represent only a fraction of a broader, ongoing investigation.
The initial wave of detainees includes several foreign nationals with documented records:
- Rubstony Junior Theodore, a Haitian national living unlawfully in the U.S., whose criminal history includes prior arrests for larceny, obstruction of officers, and trespassing.
- Wilbert Jean Baptiste, Louis Jean, and Jhensly Charles—three additional Haitian nationals taken into custody by federal immigration agents.
- Elizabeth Povea Rodriguez, a Cuban national residing in the country without legal status, who faces prior convictions for disorderly conduct alongside past arrests on battery and domestic violence allegations.
A Broader Crackdown on Public Program Abuse
The nationwide sweep aligns with the Trump administration’s broader push to scrutinize public assistance frameworks and tighten enforcement against public benefit misuse. Alongside ICE’s targeted immigration actions, federal partners, including the Department of Justice, have stepped up parallel initiatives addressing wider fraud schemes spanning USDA programs.
Describing the current detentions as “just a drop in the bucket,” Secretary Mullin signaled that federal agencies intend to expand their scope.
”These arrests mark the opening salvo in a sustained, large-scale ICE operation specifically targeting illegal aliens who have fraudulently accessed SNAP benefits that American taxpayers fund exclusively for U.S. citizens in need,” DHS stated.
Federal investigators have urged state and local agencies to tighten verification protocols as the administration vows continued oversight to root out systematic welfare fraud.
