The Department of State Services has uncovered a plot targeting National Youth Service Corps members and other ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 general elections, with suspects arrested and expected to face prosecution.
The DSS plot NYSC members 2027 revelation was made by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan during the commission’s South-East Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment in Enugu .
THE PLOT
According to INEC’s Daily Bulletin, the commission recently identified potential risks to its ad hoc staff, especially youth corps members, and took measures to neutralise the threat.
Amupitan said the people behind the plot were uncovered by the DSS and would be prosecuted soon.
He did not disclose the identities of the suspects, the locations targeted, or the precise nature of the planned attacks.
Corps members have traditionally played important roles in Nigeria’s electoral process, deployed to polling units and collation centres to support electoral officers and assist with accreditation and voting procedures.
THE SECURITY ARCHITECTURE
Amupitan said the commission plans to host a Security Conference “very soon” to address other issues relating to election security.
He said INEC’s partnership with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security had been reinvigorated and expanded .
The commission is working with security agencies at national and state levels, using its Election Risk Management tools, to develop “a robust, intelligence-driven security architecture”.
THE MISINFORMATION THREAT
The INEC chairman identified a lingering public trust deficit, voter apathy and the rising tide of misinformation and disinformation as the commission’s greatest challenges.
“A single malicious fake news post, an unverified rumour, or a deepfake video can travel across millions of screens in seconds,” he warned.
He said false narratives only gain traction when the commission’s administrative execution falters .
“The conduct, competence, and character of our staff in the field are either our strongest defence against fake news, or its biggest catalyst,” he stated.
THE WARNING TO STAFF
Amupitan issued a stern warning to INEC staff against partisanship and misconduct.”Partisan leaning, administrative negligence, extortion, or compromised ethics will not be tolerated under my leadership,” he said .
He reminded staff that Section 26 of the Electoral Act 2026 requires all staff, Electoral Officers, Presiding Officers, Returning Officers and participating security officials to swear an oath of loyalty and neutrality .
“The question governing your actions must never be ‘Who will benefit from this decision?’
The question must always be ‘What does the law require me to do?'” he said .

WHY IT MATTERS
The plot against corps members is a chilling reminder of the risks faced by young Nigerians who serve as ad hoc staff during elections.
They are deployed to polling units across the country, often in remote and sometimes dangerous locations. They are the face of the electoral process at the grassroots level.
If they are targeted, the integrity of the entire election is at stake. The DSS arrests are a positive development. But the fact that such a plot existed at all raises serious questions about the security of the 2027 elections.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the suspects are in custody and will be prosecuted. INEC’s security conference is expected to address further measures.
