The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, where bitters were being produced and sold using a registration number that belongs to a cough syrup.
The NAFDAC raid followed a report published on October 10, 2026, concerning herbal products bearing falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.
THE DISCOVERY
According to NAFDAC, its investigative team conducted surveillance before moving in on the facility.
The team discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing NAFDAC Registration Number A7-1827L.
Verification through NAFDAC’s NAPAMS portal revealed that the registration number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, confirming its fraudulent use on the herbal products.
“The company’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer was absent during the operation, while the company manager was arrested for further interrogation,” the agency stated .The arrested suspect was identified as 39-year-old Abdullazeez Saidu .
THE CALL FOR INFORMATION
NAFDAC urged members of the public to provide credible information on suspected illegal manufacturing activities..
The agency can be reached through its Call Centre on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or via email at reforms@nafdac.gov.ng .
A SERIES OF RAIDS
The Agege raid is the latest in a series of enforcement operations the agency has carried out across the country.
On October 14, NAFDAC seized counterfeit alcoholic beverages valued at more than N2 billion during a raid at the International Trade Fair Complex in Lagos .
WHY IT MATTERS
The use of a cough syrup registration number for herbal bitters is not a mere administrative error. It is fraud. It means that products being consumed by Nigerians have not been evaluated or approved for the purposes they are being sold for. It means that the regulatory framework designed to protect public health has been circumvented.
NAFDAC’s raid is a necessary intervention. But it also raises questions: how many other products are being sold with falsified or misappropriated registration numbers? And how many are reaching consumers without any regulatory oversight at all?
ValidViewNetwork reports that the manager is in custody. The investigation continues.
