The Government of Mexico has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his diplomatic posting.
The development was announced by Omokri himself in a post on X on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
THE APPROVAL
Omokri disclosed that the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the agrément confirming the Mexican government’s acceptance of his appointment to the Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil .
“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua,” he wrote.
THE JOURNEY
President Bola Tinubu first nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position on November 29, 2025, alongside 31 other nominees, including former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu .
The Senate confirmed the ambassadorial nominees in December 2025 .
On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective countries, assigning Omokri to Mexico City.
However, his posting remained among those awaiting formal diplomatic approval from the host country.
In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments .
THE SPECULATION
Omokri’s posting attracted public attention amid reports that Mexico had yet to grant the diplomatic clearance required for him to assume office .
In March, reports emerged that a Nigerian diaspora group had petitioned Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, urging her government to reject Omokri’s nomination over his political comments and past positions on Nigerian leaders .
There was, however, no official confirmation at the time that Mexico had rejected his appointment.
Omokri dismissed the speculation in June during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, attributing the delay to diplomatic processes and Mexico’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the country is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.
“Mexico has not rejected me. Not at all. You should understand that Mexico is right now hosting the World Cup, along with the United States of America, and all of their focus is on that,” he said .
“Most of us ambassadors have not resumed. So, I’m not the only one. A lot of my colleagues are in my situation, but it’s okay. These things happen”.
WHAT AGRÉMENT MEANS
Agrément is the formal consent a receiving country gives before an ambassador nominated by another country can be appointed to serve there. It is a key stage in diplomatic relations and must precede an envoy’s formal assumption of duty .
WHY IT MATTERS
Omokri’s confirmation ends months of speculation and marks the formal beginning of his diplomatic career.
He will serve as Nigeria’s representative not only in Mexico but also in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua — a significant diplomatic portfolio spanning Central America.
For the Tinubu administration, the approval is a quiet victory in a posting that had become a subject of public scrutiny and political commentary.

For Omokri, a former media aide to President Goodluck Jonathan and a polarising political commentator, the ambassadorial role represents a new chapter.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Omokri did not specify when he would formally assume duties in Mexico or present his credentials to the Mexican president .
