LONDON — Prince Harry has broken his silence on the deep-seated rift within the British royal family, declaring that while he is deeply eager to mend ties with his brother, Prince William, and King Charles III, road-blocks remain because “some people don’t want it to work out”.
In a wide-ranging, candid interview with GQ magazine, the 42-year-old Duke of Sussex opened up about the emotional toll of ongoing estrangement, admitting that he “of course” grieves the broken bond with his only sibling.
However, comments regarding institutional resistance quickly sparked intense media speculation, prompting a swift clarification from a spokesperson for the duke insisting the remarks were not meant as a direct swipe at William or individual family members.
A Universal Struggle
Reflecting on the public fascination with the royal feud, Harry noted that family estrangements are a profoundly relatable burden for households worldwide.
”There’s sibling disagreements, there’s broken relationships between kids and their parents… That continues to come with me the whole time with people I speak to,” Harry told the publication. “That’s probably why there’s so much fascination… People maybe look at us and go: ‘How are you going to work it out?’ Then: ‘Maybe how I see you’re going to work it out, maybe that will help me work my stuff out.'”
Despite the persistent tension—which intensified after the Sussexes stepped back from senior royal duties and subsequently relocated back to the U.K. alongside Meghan Markle and their two children—Harry emphasized that global realities make internal feuds trivial by comparison.
”With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point,” Harry said. “For me, there’s enough drama in the world and enough drama in people’s lives than to continue with issues with family.”
The Path Forward
Encouraging others dealing with trauma or family fallout to evaluate their mindsets, the duke acknowledged that emotional wounds rarely vanish completely.
”Scars stick around forever. But what your perception is, and what your mindset is to those things that have happened, letting go of the past—that’s something that I would encourage everybody to do,” he urged.
Royal insiders remain skeptical about an immediate thaw in relations, particularly as William and senior royals navigate busy schedules and continuing public friction surrounding the Sussex family’s high-profile return. Yet, Harry remains steadfast in his outward message that drawing a line under historical grievances is critical for the greater good.
When asked if he truly believes the fractured family dynamic can be repaired, Harry offered a definitive response: “Yeah, of course.”
