Freddie Jackson, the Grammy-nominated American R&B singer whose soulful voice produced hits including “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight”, has died at 70.
His family confirmed his death on social media. Jackson died on October 5, three days after celebrating his 70th birthday. No cause of death was immediately disclosed.
VOICE OF 1980S R&B
Jackson emerged as one of the leading voices of American R&B during the 1980s.
His 1985 debut album, Rock Me Tonight, became a major success and earned two Grammy nominations.
The album produced the hit title track as well as songs that established Jackson as one of the defining voices of romantic R&B. His follow-up album, Just Like the First Time, also achieved major commercial success.
A CAREER THAT LASTED DECADES
Born in Harlem, New York, Jackson began singing gospel before moving into the club circuit and later securing a recording deal.
He eventually accumulated numerous R&B chart successes. Jackson remained involved in music for decades and released his final album in 2023. He also became involved in kidney disease awareness after publicly discussing his diagnosis in 2024 and working with the National Kidney Foundation.
