FG Rolls Out 100 Electric Buses to Ease Workers’ Commute

​ABUJA — In a major push to cushion the effects of economic adjustments and modernize public transportation, the Federal Government has commissioned the first batch of 37 electric buses out of an approved fleet of 100 under the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Programme.

​Unveiled at Eagle Square, Abuja, the initiative is designed to drastically reduce commuting costs, enhance punctuality, and improve the overall welfare and productivity of federal civil servants.

​A Milestone for Workers’ Welfare

​Speaking at the launch event, the outgoing Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, described the deployment as her official “parting gift” to the workforce. She emphasized that daily transit heavily dictates employee finances, safety, and operational output.

​”An intervention that makes transportation safer, more reliable, and more affordable is not a peripheral welfare gesture; it is an investment in a more productive civil service,” Walson-Jack stated.

​Funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, the project aims to shield workers from high transport overheads. The initial rollout will operate on pilot routes across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) before scaling up to federal secretariats nationwide.

​Technological Capacity and Industrial Growth

​The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh, noted that the initiative merges worker welfare with green technology and industrialization. According to project specifications, each high-capacity electric bus can accommodate up to 200 passengers and travel a minimum of 200 kilometers on a single full charge.

​The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) confirmed that the full complement of the 100 electric buses will hit Nigerian roads in a phased rollout leading up to December 2026. Stakeholders have urged local manufacturing outfits to leverage the momentum by deepening local content production and expanding maintenance infrastructure to guarantee the long-term sustainability of the green fleet.
