A young girl from Ebonyi State has been hospitalised after her aunt’s boyfriend allegedly beat her with a bread toaster in Asaba, Delta State, over her inability to learn basic numbers.

The incident, which occurred at Ikpoto near Power Line Market, has raised fresh concerns about child abuse and the safety of children placed in the care of relatives, ValidViewNetwork reports .

THE ATTACK

According to a concerned resident who intervened, the girl said her aunt’s boyfriend attacked her with a bread toaster while attempting to teach her how to count from one to five .

The man became angry because the child was struggling to learn the numbers and was not performing well academically.

The girl reportedly explained that she had only recently arrived from her village and was experiencing life outside her community for the first time .

THE INJURIES

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the visibly injured girl narrated how her aunt’s boyfriend assaulted her while her aunt was not at home .

She disclosed that she could not vividly remember the name of her hometown in Ebonyi State, reportedly because of the injuries and trauma she had suffered.

She also told those who rescued her that her aunt and the alleged attacker had recently been having disagreements. The man was identified as someone from Imo State who was dating her aunt .

THE RESCUE

Following the incident, a concerned resident volunteered to assist the girl, working alongside another woman and members of the Ikpoto Security Vigilante to ensure she received medical attention.

They initially took the child to El Comfort Hospital at Bonssac Junction, Asaba, for treatment.

However, medical personnel at the hospital reportedly referred her to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, for a CT scan to further examine the extent of her injuries .

The resident disclosed that she could not accompany the girl to FMC because she was down with malaria. She said she had volunteered alongside the other woman to monitor the situation and ensure the girl received the necessary medical attention .

WHY IT MATTERS

This is a story about a child who was sent to live with a relative, only to be brutalized by that relative’s partner.

She could not count from one to five. Instead of patience, she received a bread toaster to the head. Instead of help, she received trauma so severe that she cannot remember the name of her own hometown.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about child abuse, domestic violence and the safety of children placed in the care of relatives and other adults .

he alleged attacker has not been arrested, as of the time of the report. The girl is receiving treatment. And the question remains: how many other children are suffering in silence, in homes where they were supposed to be safe? ValidViewNetwork reports.
