BILLINGS, Mont. — A routine Sunday family gathering turned into an unimaginable horror on August 23, when a 44-year-old reclusive man allegedly shot and killed eight of his relatives—spanning four generations—before setting fire to a home outside Billings.

According to investigators and family members, the suspect, identified as Alan Smith, opened fire on his family during a weekly dinner. Among the eight victims were Smith’s parents, his grandmother in her 90s, his younger sister, and four children.

Local authorities and neighbors confirmed that 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere acted courageously as a hero during the onslaught, managing to dial 911 to alert emergency services before her life was cut short.

Police officers responding to the White Star Circle residence heard gunshots from the rear of the property just moments before the structure was consumed by an aggressive fire, burning it down to its foundation. Investigators confirmed that Smith suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and died at the scene.

A Devastated Community and Heartbroken Families

The victims included a tightly knit, blended family originally from the Seattle area. Among the dead were Megan Ghekiere and her two children with ex-husband Brad Ireland: 13-year-old Owen Ireland and 7-year-old Chloe Ireland. Also killed were Megan’s two stepchildren with her current husband, Adam Ghekiere: 15-year-old Landon Ghekiere and 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere.

Adam Ghekiere, who was working at a local airport at the time, learned of the active shooter situation over a workplace dispatch radio. He raced across town, only to find his family’s home engulfed in flames.

Relatives stated that Smith had lived a reclusive lifestyle, spending his days isolated in his room. Though his parents had recently asked him to move out of the home, he unexpectedly returned on Sunday evening.

The Billings Police Department, led by spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Stovall, noted that the ongoing investigation has faced severe hurdles due to the compromised structural integrity of the burned-out home. Friends have since established online fundraising campaigns to support the grieving relatives and first responders affected by the unprecedented tragedy.
