In a breakthrough operation, the Bayelsa State Police Command has rescued 42-year-old Esther Chinedu from a notorious kidnapper’s den deep within the Ogumbri Forest, South-Dajo area. The victim, who runs a phone and accessories shop in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, regained her freedom after enduring nearly a month in brutal captivity. Operatives of the command’s Crime Response Squad, backed by marine and federal units, raided the forest camp at 1:45 a.m., securing the victim’s release and arresting a 33-year-old suspect linked to the criminal ring.
Inside the Midnight Rescue Operation
The breakthrough followed weeks of intense intelligence gathering and digital tracking. Briefing journalists on the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, explained that the command activated its security architecture immediately after receiving a distress call reporting the abduction on July 28, 2026.
A specialized tactical team led by CSP Chris Mark camped out in the treacherous terrain of the Ogumbri Forest for five days prior to the final assault. Despite difficult riverine conditions, the operatives successfully stormed the camp, rescuing Mrs. Chinedu unhurt and apprehending a key suspect from the Akemfa 1 community. The detained suspect has since confessed to the crime, detailing how the gang monitored the victim’s shop before executing the daytime strike.
A Month of Agony: The Husband’s Ordeal
For the victim’s husband, the ordeal was a psychological nightmare marked by relentless ransom negotiations and immense family pressure. Speaking on the terrifying experience, he recalled rushing back from Abia State upon receiving the news of his wife’s kidnapping.
The abductors initially slapped an astronomical 100 million Naira price tag on the victim’s freedom before grinding the figure down through desperate negotiations. Despite paying nearly 1.8 million Naira in cumulative installments, the criminals continually shifted the goalposts, demanding additional millions and triggering friction within the extended family over delayed payment logistics. The father also revealed the heartbreak of shielding his young children from the reality of their mother’s sudden disappearance, noting how his toddler continually asked for her whereabouts.
Victims Recounts Terrifying Ordeal
Reflecting on her harrowing month in the forest, Mrs. Chinedu described the environment as exceptionally grim. She recounted how the gunmen ambushed her under the guise of making a purchase before whisking her away in a boat.
While she was spared physical abuse—save for a single incident where she was assaulted for praying—the emotional toll was severe, causing her to reject food for days. Expressing profound gratitude to the Almighty and the tactical police units, she offered heartfelt prayers for the safety and provision of the officers who put their lives on the line to restore her liberty.
Police Warn Criminal Elements
Following the successful operation, CP Adewale sounded a stern warning to criminal networks operating within Bayelsa State, assuring residents that law enforcement agencies will relentlessly hunt down perpetrators of violent crimes. He commended Governor Douye Diri’s administration for providing vital logistical support and appealed to youths to shun criminality, urging them instead to channel their energy into legitimate economic empowerment.
