Jose Mourinho has officially begun his second tenure as Real Madrid manager, arriving at the club’s training facility this week to spearhead a cultural overhaul at the Santiago Bernabéu. The 63-year-old, appointed in June to replace Álvaro Arbeloa, faces the immediate task of instilling discipline in a dressing room that has struggled with internal harmony and a lack of silverware over the past two seasons.
Speaking to Real Madrid TV, the veteran Portuguese tactician emphasized that his return is about more than just results. “Words are not enough because this is like a mission,” Mourinho stated. “I’m not worried about myself, or if I will win a lot or a little; I am here to help everyone to be better—players, staff—to create a culture of work, responsibility, ambition, and the honour of working for Real Madrid.”
A New Era of Discipline
Mourinho’s arrival follows a turbulent 2025-26 campaign defined by high-profile dressing room friction, including a physical altercation between midfielders Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde that required hospital treatment. Previous managers Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa struggled to balance the star-studded squad, failing to integrate Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Vinícius Júnior into a cohesive unit.
President Florentino Pérez is reportedly looking to replicate the “siege mentality” Mourinho famously cultivated during his initial 2010–2013 stint, during which he challenged Pep Guardiola’s legendary Barcelona side and secured a historic 100-point La Liga title.
Strategic Recruitment
To support the transition, Real Madrid has been aggressive in the transfer market. The club has bolstered its ranks with several high-profile signings, including:
- Marc Cucurella: A €60m arrival expected to anchor the defensive flank.
- Denzel Dumfries: The Dutch right-back joined from Inter in a €20m deal, bringing Champions League and Serie A experience.
- Bernardo Silva & Ibrahima Konaté: Both have arrived on free transfers, adding significant tactical flexibility and experience to the squad.
Mourinho is currently overseeing preparations ahead of next week’s official pre-season start. His competitive debut is expected to take place in mid-August against Real Sociedad as he looks to guide Los Blancos back to the pinnacle of Spanish football.
