OGERE, OGUN STATE – Tragedy struck in the early hours of Thursday morning as a fatal collision between a truck and a commercial bus left two people dead and the bus reduced to charred wreckage.
The accident, which occurred at approximately 5:10 a.m. at Ogbere Junction along the Ogbere-J4 corridor, involved a white Mack truck (registration number ABC660XC) and an orange Peugeot J5 bus.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, the collision resulted in an immediate fire that engulfed the front section of the bus. Of the four adult males on board the vehicles, two lost their lives at the scene, while the remaining two miraculously escaped without injury.
Afolake Odunsi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, stated that rescue teams arrived at the site within two minutes of receiving a distress call. While the rescue personnel managed traffic flow and diverted vehicles to an alternative carriageway to prevent congestion, the Nigeria Police Force’s Motor Traffic Division from Ogbere facilitated the recovery of the bodies, which have since been deposited at a local mortuary.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC point to a combination of route violation and excessive speeding as the primary catalysts for the crash.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed his deepest condolences to the grieving families and issued a stern warning to motorists. He emphasized that reckless driving, particularly speeding and violating traffic routes, continues to be a primary driver of preventable fatalities on Nigerian roads. He urged all road users—especially commercial drivers—to prioritize caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, particularly when navigating highways during periods of low visibility or on wet, hazardous surfaces.

This incident follows a series of recent road tragedies in Ogun State, underscoring the ongoing challenges of highway safety along the region’s busy transit corridors. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to continued enforcement and public sensitization campaigns to curb these avoidable disasters.
Do you believe that increasing the presence of traffic enforcement patrol teams on the Ogbere-J4 corridor during early morning hours would be an effective strategy to discourage the reckless driving that often leads to these fatal incidents?
